I have never surfed in the 40 plus years I have lived in Hawai'i given my lack of coordination and self-confidence. My surfing memories are of watching my brother Rick surf at Folly Beach, South Carolina in the late 60's where us younger girls would sit on the beach sucking in our stomachs under our bikinis hoping the surfer dudes would notice us. Good luck with that one! But I do love the water so I jumped on the "sign up for surfing" list hoping to get a boogie board and just float in the Atlantic Ocean. The initial challenge was getting the wet suit over my body. Not having the strength or intense desire to "suit up", I was about to give up when Niamh resolutely stuck her face up to mine and said, "You will not give up." I choose not to argue with her. The water was cold and choppy but the guides were wonderful in setting us up so yes, I got a surfboard out there and rode a couple waves - laying down of course. It was thrilling and an exhausting walk back up the hill but I'm so glad I said yes. REMINDER TO CARLA: Say yes more often.
